The Bistro at Alley Palais

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

The Bistro at Alley Palais

Twice we’ve been to The Bistro, and we’ve enjoyed both visits equally. The new layout is welcoming and, at this time of the year, warm. As is the welcome from the staff, Chef Antoine and waitress Gemma.

So, to the food. The first time we went there we both had the Sizzling Prawns for our starter. The best we have had in any restaurant in Spain, really large succulent prawns, the oil just perfect with garlic and chilli – you have to try them. For our main course Adrian had a steak – he’s very fussy about his steak – and it was perfect. I had the Jamaican spare ribs and the portion was so big that I had to have a ‘doggy bag’ (the contents of which Adrian had for lunch the following day). Both mains came with really good handcut chips, the ribs with a portion of stir fried vegetables, the steak with mushrooms, grilled tomato and the vegetables.

There is a small selection of puddings, Apple Strudel, Brownies, Waffles and Pancakes. Adrian decided he could manage the Brownies, which came with chocolate ice-cream, a large chocolate covered strawberry, chocolate sauce and cream, and I wanted the Apple Strudel but couldn’t manage it then, so another doggy bag was supplied and we shared it the following day.

Two nights later we returned with Norma and Bernard. Adrian again had the Sizzling Prawns, whilst Norma, Bernard and I had soup. One of each, Tomato and Basil soup, Pea soup and Fish soup. All were absolutely delicious, we all tried each others. For mains one Steak and all the trimmings, one Spare Ribs (this time with Cajun spices) and two of us had the Thai Chicken and Prawn Stir Fry. Wonderful. In fact we couldn’t quite manage to eat all that came on the Stir Fry plates, but fortunately Bernard was able to help Norma finish hers.

Couldn’t make up our minds whether we wanted a dessert after all that food, but Antoine came up with the answer. A ‘taster platter’ of all the deserts, plus banana fritters and some fresh fruit which we all shared. Coffee and after dinner mints ended a wonderful meal that came to about €18 each. Forgot to say that the two men had a pint each and Norma and I had a glass of rose wine and we all shared a large bottle of water.

So, highly recommended, go along and support the newest restaurant on Camposol. We need somewhere like this to go for good food, served in comfortable surroundings, by friendly and talented people.
